2 Player Co-op Games in Your Browser (Same Keyboard)

Looking for 2 player co-op games in your browser that work on the same keyboard? Here's the honest answer: lots of old-school browser games are built for exactly this, but "co-op" is rarer than "versus", and a few of the best need a gamepad. This list sorts out which games really share one keyboard, which need controllers, and which let you play together online instead.
Two players on one keyboard usually means one person uses WASD and the other uses the arrow keys, with the action buttons on opposite sides (for example, Space for player one and Right Ctrl or the numpad for player two). It works well on a full-size laptop or desktop keyboard. Two things to watch for: some keyboards can't register three or more keys pressed at once (called "ghosting"), and phones and tablets rarely support it. If you have a controller or two, most co-op games are more comfortable with those.
Ours. A 2-player ink-wash action platformer where the red thread between you is your best weapon: it cuts every yokai it touches, you can swing from your partner over a pit, and you build up a shared Resonance gauge for a combined ultimate. It supports couch co-op with two gamepads or two keyboard sets on one keyboard, plus online co-op by room code, and you can drop in at any time. Playing alone? An AI partner named Tsuki fills the second slot. Five chapters, five bosses.
Ours. A 3D action game on a floating Zen garden. Player one is the Monk (support: staff combos, a chi shield, healing) and player two is the Dragon Sister, who transforms into four elemental dragons. It's split-screen on one device: player one uses WASD and player two uses the arrow keys and numpad for actions (all controls are remappable in the menu). Heads up: on phones it's one-player only.

03 Fireboy and Watergirl series Free · Browser · Puzzle co-op
The classic. Two characters, two sets of keys, one temple full of puzzles where fire and water mix badly. It's built for same-keyboard play and has been a school-computer staple for years. Find it on the popular free-game portals.

04 TankTrouble Free · Browser · Versus
A top-down tank maze where you bounce shells off the walls. It's a versus game rather than co-op, and it's supported for multiple players on one keyboard. Quick, chaotic and good for a five-minute break.
Ours, and not a same-keyboard game, but it belongs on the list if you want to play with a friend who's in another room. It's a ninja brawler for 2 to 8 players online (with bots filling any empty slots), with Quick Play or a private room code. Eight elemental ninjas, or design your own.
Also ours and also online rather than same-keyboard. Up to four players share a five-letter room code for a zombie survival game: Longest Survival is co-op, King of the Hill is versus. Good when your co-op partner lives elsewhere.

Which one should you open first? Together on a sofa with a laptop: Red String Ronin. Together but want 3D combat: The Monk & The Dragon Sister. Puzzle night: Fireboy and Watergirl. Friend far away: Shinobi Brawl or Last Lantern.
Make same-keyboard play work
Use a full-size keyboard. Laptop keyboards without a numpad make some control schemes awkward. In Monk, you can remap player two's keys in the menu.
Plug in a controller or two. Red String Ronin supports gamepads, and with two pads you avoid keyboard-ghosting problems entirely.
Sit far apart enough to see the screen. It sounds silly, but split-screen needs a bigger window. Go fullscreen.
Talk about the thread. In Red String Ronin, run opposite circles to lasso a whole horde; stand on each other's heads to reach high ledges. Co-op games reward calling things out.
Try the thread
This demo is Red String Ronin's attract mode: two AI spirits playing the first chapter on their own, so you can see the red thread in action before you grab a second set of hands.

What are good 2 player browser games on the same keyboard?
Red String Ronin: Moonfall (co-op platformer), The Monk & The Dragon Sister (split-screen 3D action), Fireboy and Watergirl (puzzle) and TankTrouble (versus) all work with two players on one keyboard.
Can you play 2 player co-op on one keyboard?
Yes, in games designed for it. Typically one player uses WASD and the other uses the arrow keys with the numpad or right-side keys for actions.
Do I need a controller for Red String Ronin?
No. It supports two keyboard sets on one keyboard, but it also works with two gamepads and online co-op by room code.
Can I play 2 player games on my phone?
Mostly no for same-device play. Our Monk game is one-player only on mobile. Online games like Elemental Shinobi Brawl and Last Lantern work on phones because each player uses their own device.
Are these games free?
They are free to play in the browser. Some of ours are labeled a free demo, with a paid full version or an optional Founders Pack, but you don't need to pay to try them.
What if I don't have a second player?
Red String Ronin gives you an AI partner (Tsuki), and The Monk & The Dragon Sister can be played solo with an AI partner too.
